Acne? This May Be Your Answer!
Acne? This May Be Your Answer!
We often tackle skin problems from the outside, slathering on so-called miracle creams in hopes for a cure. Not too long ago there was a controversy over skin problems being an internal problem or an external one. Some believed that topical treatments were ineffective because the skin was a dead tissue. Others believed that all skin problems were external, and the internal condition of the body had no effect on the skin. According to ancient Asian medical wisdom, skin problems can be treated both internally and externally.
- Pantothenic acid, also called vitamin-B5, is essential for health and metabolism. Researchers all over the world have published reports about its effects on mental health and acne. All the B-vitamins are essential for different metabolic processes in the body, however, B5 is vital for skin and brain health. A deficiency is evidenced by acne, skin lesions, and depression (such as moderate to severe depression, bi-polar disorder, and other mental health issues) doctors have recently begun using vitamin-B5 to treat teenage and adult acne and mental health disorders. It decreases hormone production which aggravates acne and promotes hormone production which boosts mood and skin health.
-Vitamin-E is essential for skin health. It acts as an immune system booster, preventing skin infections and promoting decreased healing time. For optimum results, take a supplement and massage some onto the skin at least once per day. A vitamin-E deficiency can result in several different types of acne, including the bumps on the back of the arms, and lesions found elsewhere on the body. It acts as an antibiotic, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and promotes healthy skin by increasing the body's ability to heal itself. It also helps to regulate several key hormones researchers claim are responsible for acne outbreaks.
-Exfoliation is essential for skin health. Dead skin cells, dirt, dust, and grime from daily activites can clog pores. Using a mild exfoliate daily can help remove dead skin, bacteria, and help keep pores cleaner, reducing the chances of forming blackheads and infection of blocked pores.
-Caffeine is skin’s worst enemy. In addition to causing dehydration, which does cause skin problems due to reduced ability of the body to fight infections, it aggravates the adrenal function, causing hormone imbalances which have been linked to increased acne problems.
-White carbohydrates have been linked, in laboratory studies, to increased hormone production which can lead to insulin spikes. Both white breads, flours, and all forms of refined sugar increase insulin which increases leptin. Increased leptin and insulin production increases the hormones responsible for increased sebum, or skin oil production. This can cause oily skin and increased acne outbreaks.
-Saturated fat, similar to sugars and carbohydrates, researchers say, can increase the hormones responsible for increased sebum production and thus, acne lesions. Reduce saturated fat intake and increase unsaturated and medium chain fatty acid intake. The less saturated fat in a diet (mostly from hydrogenated and animal sources) and the more essential fatty acids in the diet the less acne problems, researchers have concluded.
-Lack of exercise can cause acne problems. In addition to sweating, which helps promote clear healthy skin, regular exercise results in regulated hormone levels. Most acne is a result of hormone imbalances which results in increased oil production. Regular intense exercise promotes clearer, healthier skin by helping balance hormone levels, reduce insulin levels, and improve circulation. (Please see our blog for exercise tips.)
The skin is often the first indicator if internal health. Vitamin deficiencies, poor diet, even dehydration is first evidenced by certain corresponding skin problems. The skin is the largest organ of the body, and unlike our internal organs, needs both care from the inside and care from the outside. Acne is often a result of poor diet, vitamin deficiencies, and lack of proper care. By providing the right care, both externally and internally, acne lesions can be lessened, perhaps even eradicated.

THICK OR THIN?
Thin People Don't Diet
Is there a secret to success in keeping thin? Some erroneously believe that thin people are naturally that way. The truth is, most who look slim either struggle to stay that way, or live lifestyles which cause them to be thin. Many people around the world, and certainly many in the United States, are trying desperately to lose weight and keep it off. There are many ways to do this, though many cause unwanted health complications and irreversible damage to the body.
If you or someone you know is trying to lose weight without dangerous crash diets or other gimmicks such as diet pills, then our March series of newsletters is for you. This issue covers the different reasons people can stay slim naturally, without much effort. Listen up, because you could, too!
Reason # 1, A naturally high metabolism. Many who claim to have this fail to mention that they don't always eat large meals and usually have led a full active life, even without trying. A few actually have hyperthyroid issues which need to be addressed, those that do, usually are characterized by extreme thinness or symptoms such as Graves disease.
Let’s focus on those whose busy lives lead them to be thin. These naturally burn more calories due to their jobs, running after kids, or keeping very active. Not all who have busy lives have time to exercise. They make up for it by activities. Ever wonder why the French stay so thin? This is one reason, they walk everywhere. While that doesn’t work so well in some countries, incorporating more walking in each and every day can help. Purchase a step counter and start with 1,000 steps per day. Gradually increase it to 10,000 or more steps per day over the course of a year. It’s an instant metabolism booster.
Reason # 2, They know how to eat. Here in the U.S. many kids are taught to clean their plates, and to load up on food. This is left over from the Great Depression when food was scarce and every scrap needed to be saved. In European countries, they eat until satisfied. Satisfaction is just between hunger and feeling full. It’s when you could eat more, but you are no longer hungry.
The second part of this is only eating when hungry. Here in the U.S. we also tend to feel forced to eat due to social situations or scheduled meal times. Much of this time, we actually aren’t hungry. In other countries, social eating is expected, but they opt for appetizer items such as a low calorie salad, or other dishes under 200 calories. And when they know they must eat socially, they often cut back before and after that meal on that day.
You may find you have to eat several small meals at first, but gradually your body will realize it doesn’t need it, there’s more food coming soon. And for snacking, many French carry an "juste au cas," a tiny 100 calorie snack such as raw trail mix or high fiber snack. Instead of heading to a vending machine, they keep one or two of these in their bag or pocket.
Reason#3 Most Europeans will tell you, they don't eat garbage. If food is not over the top delicious, most won’t touch it. Sure explains why food in France is so delicious. They use real food, such as butter, whole fat milk, real cream, and only fresh ingredients, not substitutes. Take a tip from them, if it isn’t mouthwatering good, don’t eat it. If a single bite of it doesn’t make your stomach growl with delight, why waste your time and waistline on it?
Reason #4 There’s an appropriate time for treats. While most French and European towns have their fair share of delectable treats, it’s not common to eat these everyday. For instance, a rich dessert might be something they eat once in a great while such as at a party or when long absent friends and family are visiting.
The daily dessert over there would more likely be a fresh, ripe fruit with a little cream, or a baked apple, minus all the trimmings and with a dash of pie spice on it. For those chocolate lovers, a single serving of chocolate is the size of Hershey’s miniatures. However, don’t be fooled, American chocolate tastes like wax. European chocolate is worth every calorie it contains. So one or two bites are fully satisfying!
These are just four of the many tips European women use to be thin. Many have grown up with such thinking so that it has become second nature to live this way. Those who battle their weight in America don't really need to crash diet, simple everyday changes will have a huge impact on metabolism. Just remember, people who stay that way don’t diet, they live the lifestyle which keeps them naturally thin!

Hemp Protein
Delicious Hemp Shake Mixes Keep You on Track!
Nutiva took their already delicious hemp protein product and combined it with delicious, high protein and high antioxidant super foods from around the world. And like their other vegan, cold processed, raw products, these shakes are soy free, dairy free, organic, and raw.
These high energy high protein super food shakes contain ground hemp seeds, blueberries, pomegranates, acai berries, goji berries, maca root, ramon nuts, and organic cocoa powder. These shakes contain high quality protein backed by essential fatty acids, low sugar, and high in minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Most shakes on the market are low in fiber, necessitating the addition of ground flax seeds or psyllium to add bulk. These shakes naturally contain fiber from the foods they were derived from, both soluble and insoluble fiber. At least one serving of fiber in every glass!
The Ingredients (all three shake flavors.)
Hemp Protein: Not processed with dangerous hexane solvents, like soy protein, hemp seeds are minimally processed using a cold process method which leaves the hemp seed in its natural and raw state. Hemp protein is 65% edestin protein and 35% albumin protein. It also contains healthy amounts of essential fatty acids, nearly one whole serving of omega-3's in each glass you drink. Hemp seeds also contain magnesium, zinc, and iron, in healthy amounts, unlike other protein mixes. With all 21 amino acids necessary for good health, these shakes are based on the best stuff on earth.
Blueberries have long been an American antioxidant staple. They are among the top ten for antioxidant and vitamin content of the world's super foods list. They are naturally sweet, yet very low in sugar.
Pomegranates are prized in some cultures. They are a compound fruit made up of many seeds, each covered individually in a capsule which contains large amounts of antioxidants and vitamin-C. They are sweet and delicious and have been a long standing part of the diets of some of the healthiest cultures on earth.
Acai berries hail from the Amazon. These delicious berries contain enough antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and a whole panel of vitamins and minerals to sustain warriors for months. Warrior men of the Amazon have long dried the berries and eaten nothing else while traveling, training, and during battles. The mighty acai contains the right amount of fat, sugar, and vitamins to sustain life.
Goji berries come from the high mountains of Tibet and until recently, wouldn’t grow anywhere else. These small dainty red berries are prized in China and Tibet for their medicinal qualities. These cultures often eat them as is, drink them as tea, dry them and use them as medicine. They are a common part of the cuisine in their native region, and for good reason. They contain phytochemicals, polysterols, and antioxidants in addition to their vitamin-C content.
Maca root is a herbaceous plant native to the high Andes plains of Bolivia and Peru. It is grown there for its fleshy root and used as a root vegetable and medicinal plant. Some sources cite that maca is eaten by warriors before battles, but this has yet to be confirmed. It is eaten in copious quantities by the local people and their livestock, suggesting little, if any, risk from consumption. (though it does need to be eaten with foods rich in iodine since it can cause a goiter in individuals whose diets are low in iodine.) Researchers have found that the complete nutritional profile contains all the necessary elements to support a healthy endocrine system.
Cocoa powder is popular around the world. It originated with the Maya and was passed on through other original South American tribes, so the stories say, and was generally reserved for their king and gods. It was labeled the food of the gods. Organic traditionally processed cocoa beans contain, not just antioxidants, but essential fatty acids and pure cocoa powder contains flavonoid antioxidants, specifically epicatechin which seems to have a beneficial affect on human cardiovascular health. Researchers believe that blood flow is increased while blood pressure is reduced after consuming cocoa. These health benefits increase with long term use and may extend to the brain and nervous system which may suggest better memory and comprehension.
All this in Three Delicious Flavors
Amazon Acai contains: the super food blend of mesquite pods, organic acai berries, organic maca root, organic brazil nut protein, and tropical fruit flavor. It is sweetened with inulin from chicory root and thickened with organic guar gum. This beverage powder is low in sugar, high in fiber and delicious!
Berry Pomegranate contains: an all organic super berry blend of mesquite pods, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cherries, pomegranates, acai berries, and goji berries. It, too, is sweetened with inulin from chicory root and also has a small amount of fair trade certified evaporated cane juice.
Chocolate blend contains: all organic; fair trade chocolate, ramon nuts, guar gum, mesquite pods, and is sweetened with inulin from chicory root and fair trade cane juice. Unlike the other two, this one has a little sugar in it.

They also contain the highest quality vegan protein sources on the planet along with the rich antioxidant and vitamin profiles of the best super foods on earth.

Secrets To Weight Loss!
Top Two Secrets for Permanent Weight Loss Revealed
Our last two articles delved into the delicate world of the leptin and cortisol hormone balance which many fad diets ignore when they promise permanent weight loss. One of the huge risk factors for these diets is that once leptin levels have been reduced due to eating less, the levels do not rise quickly enough to make up for it when a person resumes normal healthy eating patterns. This often results in not enough leptin getting to the brain and signaling satiety.
By the time leptin production catches up with the rest of the body, too much insulin and cortisol are being produced for the leptin to be received by the brain. This is why many people, especially the morbidly obese, are leptin resistant. To change this so that less cortisol and insulin are produced and more leptin reaches the brain, thus reversing leptin resistance, two paths must be undertaken.
The first path is dangerous drugs, hormone therapy, even leptin injections. Not a good choice. While leptin injections and hormone therapy is not common, a similar problem, insulin resistance, exists. Let’s take a peek into what happens to people who are dependant on insulin injections to cope with blood sugar problems, shall we?
First, their pancreas goes on holiday. The pancreas becomes atrophied and produces less and less insulin and soon quits altogether. Thus, the person becomes dependant on the injections. Second, once the pancreas stops, it also stops producing other very important hormones, including those which induce leptin to be produced. This results in a plethora of health complications and usually early death. One can conclude, since leptin and insulin are practically "tied at the hip" that a similar negative road will be undertaken if one succumbs to leptin therapy shots.
The second path will lead you to that "Ah ha" moment when you suddenly realize you can enjoy true healthy fat loss and enjoy more energy. This plan has you burning more calories and eating normally, this means real regular food, you actually want to eat. Don't presume this gives you license to eat anything you want. There are definite foods you should avoid and ones you should eat sparingly. Along this second path, you will be doing more physically, but exercising less, just 15 minutes per day of exercise.
How Do I Eat?
You may be wondering what exactly you are going to be eating. First, you must eat real food, the kind you actually have to cut up and cook yourself. No drive though, fast food, restaurants, or any prepackaged, canned or frozen food. (with the exception of frozen vegetables and berries.) The reason is, most packaged food, especially in America, has added ingredients such as dextrose, corn syrup, and MSG and manufacturers are not required by law to publish ALL the ingredients of their foods on the labels.
Pretty sneaky, but it also means you could eat potentially fattening foods such as added saturate fats, sugars, MSG and other foods which will disrupt leptin levels and induce hunger. If you are serious about losing weight, you will avoid processed foods of all kinds. (for a detailed eating plan, please see next Sunday’s article)
Secret to Less Exercise?
That’s right, we will go into details next Wednesday as to why this works. For now, stop exercising for long duration cardiovascular training. This is great exercise, if you are going to run a race or marathon, but in the long run it increases stress levels in the body, encouraging the body to maintain its fat levels and desire for food.
What you want is intense exercise which lasts just 15 minutes per day, every day of the week. Pair this exercise with more physical activities during the day, such as taking the stairs, walking to the store, taking a leisurely stroll every day, and using your own hands, rather than appliances when possible. Take the long way to the lunchroom or water cooler, chase your kids around the yard after work, get up and walk to the TV to change the channels. Incorporate little things to burn more calories.
