STRESSED!

We’re all busy people. We live in a high-paced, fast-moving society and we basically live on the go. But when we can’t be in two places at once, how do we manage that overwhelming feeling? What are some ways we can reduce our stress levels without loading ourselves up on supplements, drugs, or trying to release that stress in negative ways; like smoking, drinking, or binge eating.

1. Try to keep your hormones in check. If your hormones are off the walls, your emotions are going to be too. If you’re feeling moody, don’t lash out, but do something relaxing to help stabilize your hormones.

2. In relation to number 1, EXERCISE. Exercise releases many hormones, endorphins, etc. You’ll feel refreshed, and it’s good for you.

3. Eat well-Like the domino effect, if you’re going to eat fast food every day, it’s going to slow down your metabolism, which in turns makes you feeling sluggish, and if you’re feeling sluggish with a big To-Do list, you’re probably not going to be a very happy person.

4. Just say NO-You probably enough stuff to do today, don’t overwhelm yourself with adding one more task. If you don’t have the time, you simply don’t have the time. People will understand, or so we hope anyways.

5. Your environment-if you’re overwhelmed, anxious, and stressed out, the last thing you need is loud, obnoxious behavior surrounding you. Even if you have a busy work day, put some classical music on, take a second, clear your head, and just breathe. Breathing exercises throughout your day (especially if you suffer from anxiety) will help you manage your stress levels.

With the new school/fall season starting shortly here, we want our readers to be able to handle things they may encounter during this time in smart, efficient, and good-for-you ways.

If you’re someone who’s tried all of these, and no luck, we do carry natural supplements that are known for managing stress and anxiety levels.

Stress-x by Trace Minerals Research has been one of our top sellers for this particular reason.

We also carry many homeopathic remedies, King Bio, one of our newest manufacturers has a wonderful selection to choose from.

This article provides a healthy recipe for a tasteful, nutritional snack! Both adults and your kid’s will love these, and the best part of all of this, is that this is easy, quick, and GOOD for you.

The first of our many recipes would have to be our Protein Shakes. A perfect resolution to many of you dieter’s out there. This is great for post-workout (if you just can’t stand the taste of protein) or if you’re dieting and looking to shed those last couple of pounds.

Here at Nokomis Nutrition we use the following specifics:

• 1 scoop of Chocolate Greens 8000
• 1 scoop of Vanilla Protein (by Syntrax, we use either the Matrix or the Nectar Natural Vanilla Bean Torte.)
• Teaspoon Kirkland’s natural peanut butter.

Mix all of the powders and peanut butter into about a little less than half a cup of water, when everything is stirred and mixed, add in your frozen banana and ice to the top of the cup (either put on the lid to your magic bullet or put this all into your blender) and blend.

You now have a tasteful, delicious, shake.

And for those of you, who aren’t huge into chocolate, we have many fruity shake recipes for you!
• 1 scoop of Strawberry-Kiwi Reds 8000 (or your choice of Berry Greens, Strawberry Kiwi, or Fruit Punch.)

OUR NUMBER 1!

SUPERFOODS

The United States is finally getting into detailed health! The new fad-SUPERFOODS is at a peak it’s never reached before. The only thing about this industry is that it’s here to stay.

Modern day, in our fast-past society, is it even possible for anyone to get the daily nutrition that our bodies need? No! The ADA (American Diet Association) recommends that the average adult needs at least 5-10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day! Not only can that get spendy, but it’s extremely time consuming.

The answer to our problems? Super-food powders! Generally, super-foods are high in antioxidants, usually all natural, with no preservatives, MSG, dyes, or any artificial sweeteners. However, we are left with one problem-which product on the market is the best one to go with?! We’ve done the homework for you:

One of the leading brands of “Greens” is Delicious Greens 8000. Nothing can compare to something so advanced. Most Green super-foods out there are a lot like grass-clippings, and some even smell like fish food. However, Delicious Greens 8000 with the detailed formulation by Dr. Coco March N.D., has the antioxidant power of 20 servings of fruit and vegetables. Get this, it doesn’t taste like grass clippings, and it doesn’t smell like fish food!

Here at Nokomis Nutrition, you hear us rant about this product over and over again, but we’re not lying! We’ll even prove it with free samples.

Plus, what other Green brands out there have 5 different flavors (6 if you include the kid’s formula?) Not only that, but competitor brands don’t taste nearly as good as the Greens 8000 line, and if they do taste comparable, check the nutrition facts-can they beat 20 servings of fruits and vegetables in every scoop?

It’s our number one seller, for more details, information, or any questions, give our customer service a call.

Acne? This May Be Your Answer!

Acne? This May Be Your Answer!

We often tackle skin problems from the outside, slathering on so-called miracle creams in hopes for a cure. Not too long ago there was a controversy over skin problems being an internal problem or an external one. Some believed that topical treatments were ineffective because the skin was a dead tissue. Others believed that all skin problems were external, and the internal condition of the body had no effect on the skin. According to ancient Asian medical wisdom, skin problems can be treated both internally and externally.

- Pantothenic acid, also called vitamin-B5, is essential for health and metabolism. Researchers all over the world have published reports about its effects on mental health and acne. All the B-vitamins are essential for different metabolic processes in the body, however, B5 is vital for skin and brain health. A deficiency is evidenced by acne, skin lesions, and depression (such as moderate to severe depression, bi-polar disorder, and other mental health issues) doctors have recently begun using vitamin-B5 to treat teenage and adult acne and mental health disorders. It decreases hormone production which aggravates acne and promotes hormone production which boosts mood and skin health.

-Vitamin-E is essential for skin health. It acts as an immune system booster, preventing skin infections and promoting decreased healing time. For optimum results, take a supplement and massage some onto the skin at least once per day. A vitamin-E deficiency can result in several different types of acne, including the bumps on the back of the arms, and lesions found elsewhere on the body. It acts as an antibiotic, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and promotes healthy skin by increasing the body's ability to heal itself. It also helps to regulate several key hormones researchers claim are responsible for acne outbreaks.

-Exfoliation is essential for skin health. Dead skin cells, dirt, dust, and grime from daily activites can clog pores. Using a mild exfoliate daily can help remove dead skin, bacteria, and help keep pores cleaner, reducing the chances of forming blackheads and infection of blocked pores.

-Caffeine is skin’s worst enemy. In addition to causing dehydration, which does cause skin problems due to reduced ability of the body to fight infections, it aggravates the adrenal function, causing hormone imbalances which have been linked to increased acne problems.

-White carbohydrates have been linked, in laboratory studies, to increased hormone production which can lead to insulin spikes. Both white breads, flours, and all forms of refined sugar increase insulin which increases leptin. Increased leptin and insulin production increases the hormones responsible for increased sebum, or skin oil production. This can cause oily skin and increased acne outbreaks.

-Saturated fat, similar to sugars and carbohydrates, researchers say, can increase the hormones responsible for increased sebum production and thus, acne lesions. Reduce saturated fat intake and increase unsaturated and medium chain fatty acid intake. The less saturated fat in a diet (mostly from hydrogenated and animal sources) and the more essential fatty acids in the diet the less acne problems, researchers have concluded.

-Lack of exercise can cause acne problems. In addition to sweating, which helps promote clear healthy skin, regular exercise results in regulated hormone levels. Most acne is a result of hormone imbalances which results in increased oil production. Regular intense exercise promotes clearer, healthier skin by helping balance hormone levels, reduce insulin levels, and improve circulation. (Please see our blog for exercise tips.)

The skin is often the first indicator if internal health. Vitamin deficiencies, poor diet, even dehydration is first evidenced by certain corresponding skin problems. The skin is the largest organ of the body, and unlike our internal organs, needs both care from the inside and care from the outside. Acne is often a result of poor diet, vitamin deficiencies, and lack of proper care. By providing the right care, both externally and internally, acne lesions can be lessened, perhaps even eradicated.

THICK OR THIN?

Thin People Don't Diet

Is there a secret to success in keeping thin? Some erroneously believe that thin people are naturally that way. The truth is, most who look slim either struggle to stay that way, or live lifestyles which cause them to be thin. Many people around the world, and certainly many in the United States, are trying desperately to lose weight and keep it off. There are many ways to do this, though many cause unwanted health complications and irreversible damage to the body.

If you or someone you know is trying to lose weight without dangerous crash diets or other gimmicks such as diet pills, then our March series of newsletters is for you. This issue covers the different reasons people can stay slim naturally, without much effort. Listen up, because you could, too!

Reason # 1, A naturally high metabolism. Many who claim to have this fail to mention that they don't always eat large meals and usually have led a full active life, even without trying. A few actually have hyperthyroid issues which need to be addressed, those that do, usually are characterized by extreme thinness or symptoms such as Graves disease.

Let’s focus on those whose busy lives lead them to be thin. These naturally burn more calories due to their jobs, running after kids, or keeping very active. Not all who have busy lives have time to exercise. They make up for it by activities. Ever wonder why the French stay so thin? This is one reason, they walk everywhere. While that doesn’t work so well in some countries, incorporating more walking in each and every day can help. Purchase a step counter and start with 1,000 steps per day. Gradually increase it to 10,000 or more steps per day over the course of a year. It’s an instant metabolism booster.

Reason # 2, They know how to eat. Here in the U.S. many kids are taught to clean their plates, and to load up on food. This is left over from the Great Depression when food was scarce and every scrap needed to be saved. In European countries, they eat until satisfied. Satisfaction is just between hunger and feeling full. It’s when you could eat more, but you are no longer hungry.

The second part of this is only eating when hungry. Here in the U.S. we also tend to feel forced to eat due to social situations or scheduled meal times. Much of this time, we actually aren’t hungry. In other countries, social eating is expected, but they opt for appetizer items such as a low calorie salad, or other dishes under 200 calories. And when they know they must eat socially, they often cut back before and after that meal on that day.

You may find you have to eat several small meals at first, but gradually your body will realize it doesn’t need it, there’s more food coming soon. And for snacking, many French carry an "juste au cas," a tiny 100 calorie snack such as raw trail mix or high fiber snack. Instead of heading to a vending machine, they keep one or two of these in their bag or pocket.

Reason#3 Most Europeans will tell you, they don't eat garbage. If food is not over the top delicious, most won’t touch it. Sure explains why food in France is so delicious. They use real food, such as butter, whole fat milk, real cream, and only fresh ingredients, not substitutes. Take a tip from them, if it isn’t mouthwatering good, don’t eat it. If a single bite of it doesn’t make your stomach growl with delight, why waste your time and waistline on it?

Reason #4 There’s an appropriate time for treats. While most French and European towns have their fair share of delectable treats, it’s not common to eat these everyday. For instance, a rich dessert might be something they eat once in a great while such as at a party or when long absent friends and family are visiting.

The daily dessert over there would more likely be a fresh, ripe fruit with a little cream, or a baked apple, minus all the trimmings and with a dash of pie spice on it. For those chocolate lovers, a single serving of chocolate is the size of Hershey’s miniatures. However, don’t be fooled, American chocolate tastes like wax. European chocolate is worth every calorie it contains. So one or two bites are fully satisfying!

These are just four of the many tips European women use to be thin. Many have grown up with such thinking so that it has become second nature to live this way. Those who battle their weight in America don't really need to crash diet, simple everyday changes will have a huge impact on metabolism. Just remember, people who stay that way don’t diet, they live the lifestyle which keeps them naturally thin!

Hemp Protein

Delicious Hemp Shake Mixes Keep You on Track!

Nutiva took their already delicious hemp protein product and combined it with delicious, high protein and high antioxidant super foods from around the world. And like their other vegan, cold processed, raw products, these shakes are soy free, dairy free, organic, and raw.

These high energy high protein super food shakes contain ground hemp seeds, blueberries, pomegranates, acai berries, goji berries, maca root, ramon nuts, and organic cocoa powder. These shakes contain high quality protein backed by essential fatty acids, low sugar, and high in minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Most shakes on the market are low in fiber, necessitating the addition of ground flax seeds or psyllium to add bulk. These shakes naturally contain fiber from the foods they were derived from, both soluble and insoluble fiber. At least one serving of fiber in every glass!

The Ingredients (all three shake flavors.)

Hemp Protein: Not processed with dangerous hexane solvents, like soy protein, hemp seeds are minimally processed using a cold process method which leaves the hemp seed in its natural and raw state. Hemp protein is 65% edestin protein and 35% albumin protein. It also contains healthy amounts of essential fatty acids, nearly one whole serving of omega-3's in each glass you drink. Hemp seeds also contain magnesium, zinc, and iron, in healthy amounts, unlike other protein mixes. With all 21 amino acids necessary for good health, these shakes are based on the best stuff on earth.

Blueberries have long been an American antioxidant staple. They are among the top ten for antioxidant and vitamin content of the world's super foods list. They are naturally sweet, yet very low in sugar.

Pomegranates are prized in some cultures. They are a compound fruit made up of many seeds, each covered individually in a capsule which contains large amounts of antioxidants and vitamin-C. They are sweet and delicious and have been a long standing part of the diets of some of the healthiest cultures on earth.

Acai berries hail from the Amazon. These delicious berries contain enough antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and a whole panel of vitamins and minerals to sustain warriors for months. Warrior men of the Amazon have long dried the berries and eaten nothing else while traveling, training, and during battles. The mighty acai contains the right amount of fat, sugar, and vitamins to sustain life.

Goji berries come from the high mountains of Tibet and until recently, wouldn’t grow anywhere else. These small dainty red berries are prized in China and Tibet for their medicinal qualities. These cultures often eat them as is, drink them as tea, dry them and use them as medicine. They are a common part of the cuisine in their native region, and for good reason. They contain phytochemicals, polysterols, and antioxidants in addition to their vitamin-C content.

Maca root is a herbaceous plant native to the high Andes plains of Bolivia and Peru. It is grown there for its fleshy root and used as a root vegetable and medicinal plant. Some sources cite that maca is eaten by warriors before battles, but this has yet to be confirmed. It is eaten in copious quantities by the local people and their livestock, suggesting little, if any, risk from consumption. (though it does need to be eaten with foods rich in iodine since it can cause a goiter in individuals whose diets are low in iodine.) Researchers have found that the complete nutritional profile contains all the necessary elements to support a healthy endocrine system.

Cocoa powder is popular around the world. It originated with the Maya and was passed on through other original South American tribes, so the stories say, and was generally reserved for their king and gods. It was labeled the food of the gods. Organic traditionally processed cocoa beans contain, not just antioxidants, but essential fatty acids and pure cocoa powder contains flavonoid antioxidants, specifically epicatechin which seems to have a beneficial affect on human cardiovascular health. Researchers believe that blood flow is increased while blood pressure is reduced after consuming cocoa. These health benefits increase with long term use and may extend to the brain and nervous system which may suggest better memory and comprehension.

All this in Three Delicious Flavors

Amazon Acai contains: the super food blend of mesquite pods, organic acai berries, organic maca root, organic brazil nut protein, and tropical fruit flavor. It is sweetened with inulin from chicory root and thickened with organic guar gum. This beverage powder is low in sugar, high in fiber and delicious!

Berry Pomegranate contains: an all organic super berry blend of mesquite pods, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cherries, pomegranates, acai berries, and goji berries. It, too, is sweetened with inulin from chicory root and also has a small amount of fair trade certified evaporated cane juice.

Chocolate blend contains: all organic; fair trade chocolate, ramon nuts, guar gum, mesquite pods, and is sweetened with inulin from chicory root and fair trade cane juice. Unlike the other two, this one has a little sugar in it.

Nutiva’s delicious shake blends are unlike any other on the market. They are low in sugar, comparatively, and contain two kinds of fiber for good digestion. They also contain the highest quality vegan protein sources on the planet along with the rich antioxidant and vitamin profiles of the best super foods on earth.

Secrets To Weight Loss!

Top Two Secrets for Permanent Weight Loss Revealed

Our last two articles delved into the delicate world of the leptin and cortisol hormone balance which many fad diets ignore when they promise permanent weight loss. One of the huge risk factors for these diets is that once leptin levels have been reduced due to eating less, the levels do not rise quickly enough to make up for it when a person resumes normal healthy eating patterns. This often results in not enough leptin getting to the brain and signaling satiety.

By the time leptin production catches up with the rest of the body, too much insulin and cortisol are being produced for the leptin to be received by the brain. This is why many people, especially the morbidly obese, are leptin resistant. To change this so that less cortisol and insulin are produced and more leptin reaches the brain, thus reversing leptin resistance, two paths must be undertaken.

The first path is dangerous drugs, hormone therapy, even leptin injections. Not a good choice. While leptin injections and hormone therapy is not common, a similar problem, insulin resistance, exists. Let’s take a peek into what happens to people who are dependant on insulin injections to cope with blood sugar problems, shall we?

First, their pancreas goes on holiday. The pancreas becomes atrophied and produces less and less insulin and soon quits altogether. Thus, the person becomes dependant on the injections. Second, once the pancreas stops, it also stops producing other very important hormones, including those which induce leptin to be produced. This results in a plethora of health complications and usually early death. One can conclude, since leptin and insulin are practically "tied at the hip" that a similar negative road will be undertaken if one succumbs to leptin therapy shots.

The second path will lead you to that "Ah ha" moment when you suddenly realize you can enjoy true healthy fat loss and enjoy more energy. This plan has you burning more calories and eating normally, this means real regular food, you actually want to eat. Don't presume this gives you license to eat anything you want. There are definite foods you should avoid and ones you should eat sparingly. Along this second path, you will be doing more physically, but exercising less, just 15 minutes per day of exercise.

How Do I Eat?

You may be wondering what exactly you are going to be eating. First, you must eat real food, the kind you actually have to cut up and cook yourself. No drive though, fast food, restaurants, or any prepackaged, canned or frozen food. (with the exception of frozen vegetables and berries.) The reason is, most packaged food, especially in America, has added ingredients such as dextrose, corn syrup, and MSG and manufacturers are not required by law to publish ALL the ingredients of their foods on the labels.

Pretty sneaky, but it also means you could eat potentially fattening foods such as added saturate fats, sugars, MSG and other foods which will disrupt leptin levels and induce hunger. If you are serious about losing weight, you will avoid processed foods of all kinds. (for a detailed eating plan, please see next Sunday’s article)

Secret to Less Exercise?

That’s right, we will go into details next Wednesday as to why this works. For now, stop exercising for long duration cardiovascular training. This is great exercise, if you are going to run a race or marathon, but in the long run it increases stress levels in the body, encouraging the body to maintain its fat levels and desire for food.

What you want is intense exercise which lasts just 15 minutes per day, every day of the week. Pair this exercise with more physical activities during the day, such as taking the stairs, walking to the store, taking a leisurely stroll every day, and using your own hands, rather than appliances when possible. Take the long way to the lunchroom or water cooler, chase your kids around the yard after work, get up and walk to the TV to change the channels. Incorporate little things to burn more calories.

Bergenia Root Extract(Standardized For 99% Bergenin) has been used to treat urinary problems, ear infections, earaches, fevers, diarrhea, cardiovascular problems, colds and flues. Hemorrhoids, asthma, skin problems, eye problems, muscle aches, joint problems, and even for dissolving kidney stones.

Natural Yohimbine(from Yohimbine HCL) may be an effective antioxidant, blood vessel relaxant, and may improve the cardiovascular system by improving blood flow.

Syntrax feels confidant that along with a weight loss program, Fyre™ may help improve your cardiovascular system, and metabolism. It should provide lasting energy, not a jittery high and let down. Further, every ingredient in Fyre™ is standardized for the active ingredient which gives it its power.

Matrix Protein

Let Matrix Keep You Full

To make the absolute best protein powder in the industry they had to do more than use a few cheap ingredients and some added supplements. They needed to revolutionize protein powder supplements. They went even further by making sure they were delicious tasting, mix easily into even water, and contain a full panel of healthy, non-denatured ingredients. Plus, their products do not contain ingredients which can induce fat gain such as dextrose.

The result was initially two out of these world beverages: Perfect Chocolate and Simply Vanilla. They, then, added to this Matrix line with several more incredible flavors which taste good when mixed with water or milk using just a spoon. These include: Bananas & Cream, Cookies & Cream, Orange Cream, Perfect Chocolate, Simply Vanilla, and Strawberry Cream.

Their nutritional profile includes all 21 amino acids and branched chain non-essential amino acids. Their beverages also contain important vitamins and nutrients such as vitamin-A, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin-C, iron, magnesium, and high amounts of the 8 essential amino acids needed for good health.

Their ingredients are simple: whey protein, milk protein, egg protein, soy lecithin, and natural and artificial flavors. This is truly the best protein blend since it contains anabolic and anti-catabolic proteins and glutamine peptides. Simply mix one scoop of this delicious product in 8-ounces of water or milk and go. No need to use a blender and clean up the mess.

Syntrax recommends consuming protein immediately upon rising in the morning, again after intense physical activity, and just prior to going to sleep. (Do avoid this product if you have a known milk, soy, egg, or wheat allergy.)

Exercising-The Quickie Version

Surge Training, the New Work Out

Surge training is much like internal training, only the sessions are much shorter and more intense. It's done on a limited time frame, the entire routine taking between 6 to 12 minutes or less per day. The importance of exercise does not lay with the exercise itself, but rather recovery time between the exercise. The idea of surge training is to safely shock the system into responding psychologically so that the body is left in a better metabolic state afterwards. This results in the right hormones being produced for the right effect, that is, fat burning muscle growth.

After a maximum output of just 10 to 60 seconds, the body must rest. It is this equal amount of time rest period between the bouts of exercise which retrains our subconscious brains and hormone glands to respond the way we want them to. The body must respond, and it does, it adapts in-between the surges by altering hormone levels for optimum energy and muscle building.

Contrasting this with any other low intensity exercise, walking on a treadmill or jogging on a treadmill for just 10 to 15 minutes OR LONGER causes the body to begin producing cortisol. This nasty hormone interferes with fat burning hormones such as leptin, and muscle building hormones such as HGH. It also interferes with insulin and blocks receptor sites in the brain which are intended for hormones which keep us awake, energized, and happy. Thus, low and medium intensity long-duration exercise is counter productive to our health. Cortisol is a deadly hormone which causes allergies, inflammation, stomach disorders, and premature aging.

Comparing that to surging, which is just short burst training, and you get the idea why low impact and low intensity aerobics can make people fat. If you have been working out and find that you cannot lose weight, or that health problems are still creeping up, THIS IS WHY!

Put aside those old beliefs the doctors have been trained to tell you about exercise. Anyone can do surge training, it is 100% safe and approved for anyone. You can be unfit and lying in a hospital bed and still reap benefits from surge training. The simple fact that you won't be exercising for long enough periods to put a strain on any part of your body and that your maximum output is what is right for you.

Additionally, unlike regular aerobic exercise, you do not need special equipment, a gym membership, or the right weather to do this. It is perfect for someone who has weight to lose and will actually improve the performance of top athlete if they undertake it. You just need yourself, and enough space to work out.

Getting Started

First find our maximum heart rate using this guide. Then add ten to your maximum heart rate if you are a top athlete or subtract ten if you are just beginning to exercise or are recovering from health problems. (Do consult with your physician before starting any exercise or diet program, because the FDA tells you to.)

Surge training is so exciting because it can be done by anyone and they only need to exercise as hard as they can for few seconds. For a beginner they only need to work out for 10 to 15 seconds. (A top athlete may go for up 60 seconds.) Anyone can exercise for 10 to 15 seconds right? After a few sets of 10 to 15 second surges, your brain and glands will be doing exactly what you want them to do, preparing to fuel the body with its own fat and stored sugar.

The secret is not the 10 to 15 second surge session; it’s the break in between. These are equal to the duration of the preceding surge, or until the heart rate returns to a normal range. Then you surge again. Recovery is equal to effort. You will definitely be breathing more deeply and heavily, but you will only be engaging your body just enough to get the good for you hormones flowing, not enough to induce the production of cortisol.

THE Surge Session

You only need to perform this 2 or more times per week to reap maximum benefits. Here is an example of a surge session:

-20 second of warm up by walking around a room or moving about then start:
-20 seconds of full on effort to get your heart rate to training zone.
-20 seconds of rest or cool down to let the heart return to bottom of the training zone or lower

-repeat this cycle three times and then take a 2 minute rest period.

Repeat the entire above cycle a total of three times. This will take a total of roughly 9 minutes for elapse time of only about 3 to 4 minutes of exercise. Repeat this four times per week for a total of only 36 minutes of exercise per week!

What do you do when resting? Spend the rest time lifting some weights, using bands, or performing other low intensity muscle building exercise or simply move around a bit, to keep the body in motion.

Surge training is so versatile. You don't really need any equipment. Any kind of movement will work as long as the entire body is involved. You can do jumping jacks, use stepper machines, stationary bicycles, or anything.

(For more information on surge training please see our blog.) Next week we will cover part two of this series: Lean muscle building using burst training.

Save Your Skin!

Dry Itchy Skin? You May Need This

We see the ads on television telling us that this product or that is some big miracle and will cure our dry skin. More often than not those products are petroleum based or contain heavy waxes and oils which simply coat the skin, masking the dry skin.

First, be sure the dry skin isn’t the result of an underlying medical issue. If the techniques below do not alleviate the issue, make an appointment so a medical professional who can rule out other causes such as adrenal, thyroid, digestive, or reproductive health issues.

- Essential Fatty Acids: Low fat dieting has left many with dry skin. The problem is the body is not receiving enough fat from its diet for good health, this results in health concerns, some which present with side effects such as hair loss and dry skin.

- Body Lotion: Do moisturize daily. Avoid lotions with any petroleum products, waxes, or too many ingredients or ones which you can’t name. Look for those with avocado oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, glycerin, borage oil, and other plant extracted oils.

- Glycerin Soap: Most Bar soaps are made with sodium tallowate, which is a fancy name for rendered beef fat and lye salts. Additionally, they usually contain triclosan, and other anti-bacterials. These ingredients strip skin, robbing it of moisture. Further, using the anti-bacterial soaps all the time can lead to bacterial resistance, rendering them useless. Glycerin, made from vegetable oils, simply suffocates bacteria by breaking down the batter barrier, which also helps the skin absorb more water.

- Vitamin-E: Two symptoms of vitamin-E deficiency include skin sores and dry skin problems. Skin that is slow to heal and which develops sores, pimples, and other disorders easily is usually a symptom of both vitamin-E and vitamin-B deficiencies. In addition to taking an oral supplement, eat more foods such as nuts and avocados, which contain higher amounts of vitamin-E.

-Exfoliation: Removing loose, dry skin can reveal healthier, hydrated skin below. Using a stiff brush, loofa, or other exfoliating product daily can help remove dead skin. If not exfoliated, that dead skin can build up, especially on the arms, legs, feet, hands, elbows, and knees. The dead skin resists hydration from lotions and can be itchy and feel scaly.

- Coconut Oil: This is a tropical secret to healthy skin. Coconut oil is one of the three most similar oils to skin’s natural sebum (oil). It absorbs into skin, provides UV protection and is naturally anti-bacterial, antiviral, and antifungal.

-Water: Be sure to drink plenty of water. Carbonated, caffeinated, chemically sweetened, and sugar laden food and drink can leave the body dehydrated as it tries to flush it from the system. Be sure to get plenty of fresh water and eat fresh fruits and vegetables which are not just nutrient dense, but also contain large amounts of water.

Curing dry skin doesn’t have to be a fight or a chore. With a these few tips, some diet changes, and a little daily TLC, dry itchy skin may be less of a problem and may even disappear.

Beautify Your Skin!

Beautiful Skin Starts on the Inside

Healthy, glowing skin is the result of more than a spa treatment or a nice body lotion.

Healthy, blemish free skin is the result of a good diet, water, exercise, and key nutrients. Here are 10 tips for healthy skin from the inside out:

1- Water daily. Healthy clear skin results from a healthy and hydrated body. Drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water daily. If you also drink caffeinated or sugar laden beverages, strive to cut back, and counter each one with an additional glass of water to help the body flush it out.

2- Exercise is good for more than just muscle tone. During exercise the blood vessels dilate at the skin, this flushes out the skin, cleaning it and refreshing it. It also stimulates growth and repair. Exercise results in healthier, more youthful looking skin.

3- Avoid sugar and caffeine. These both stimulate the endocrine system and raise the levels of hormones responsible for breakouts and skin problems. Plus they dehydrate the body, leaving the skin looking dull.

4- Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. They contain fiber and vitamins essential for a healthy body and intestines. The healthier we are on the inside, the healthier our skin will be. Plus, they help the body remove toxins and waste matter, leaving it better able to facilitate growth and repair of tissues.

5- Get your Probiotics. Probiotics are good for more than just a healthy gut. They play a key role in the production of essential nutrients, amino acids, and vitamins which are vital for healthy skin. Plus, they help balance the immune system and strengthen it, aiding the body in resisting bacterial infections on the skin.

6- Whole grains and legumes are rich in amino acids and vitamins from the B group. Amino acids and B-vitamins play vital roles in many metabolic processes, a deficiency in B-vitamins can result in a break down of skin tissue. This can lead to infections, blisters, boils, more acne lesions, and scaring. Healthy skin is dependant on a healthy supply of B-vitamins and amino acids.

7- Vitamin-E and essential fatty acids are also important. The body needs them to facilitate tissue repair and maintain the supple skin layers. Vitamin-E used both topically and taken as a supplement can help prevent premature aging of the skin and speed up healing. It also can help reduce the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and wrinkles. Essential fatty acids play many important roles in skin health.

8- Get adequate sleep. While we sleep, our bodies become more active. While we slumber, our bodies are busy repairing tissue damage, clearing out waste materials, and replenishing itself. Sleep is vital for healthy, clear skin. During sleep the body also produces hormones essential for proper growth and maintenance of the skin.

9- Get your vitamin-C. Avoid ascorbic acid supplements, opt for those rich with bioflavonoids and made with natural ingredients such as rose hips, acerola cherries, and other fruits. Vitamin-C plays any roles in the body including metabolic cycles, blood vessel health, tissue repair, and the immune system. Studies suggest that it also helps regulate certain hormones responsible for skin problems.

10- Avoid junk food. The chemicals and toxins found in overprocessed foods can make the skin looks old and lifeless. The carcinogens found in these foods have been shown to increase cancer and promote aging. The skin is the first place aging shows up.

Healthy skin is vital to a healthy body. In many eastern medical practices, it is believed that the health and condition of the skin is a clear indicator of the health and vitality of the body. It is said that one look at the skin can reveal much about the individual and how well he cares for himself. Look your best by caring for your skin from the inside out.

An Easy Way to Cut Back!

Whittle Your Waist Naturally

Sweeten With Stevia

Derived from the leaves of a relative of the sunflower native to South America, it has been used as a sweetening agent in that region for at least a few centuries, and has been used in Japan, as a sugar substitute, for over 30 years.

It has a licorice-like after taste in its raw form, but purified, it is a white powder with little or no after taste. It has up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar. Since it does not raise insulin, glucose, or have an effect on blood sugar levels, it shows promise as a treatment for diabetes and obesity. It has no known side effects, and unlike other chemical sweeteners, has not been shown to produce cancer or other harm in laboratory studies.

On the contrary, it has been shown to improve glucose tolerance possibly by inducing insulin production and insulin sensitivity. In some countries, it is being used to treat conditions such as heartburn, obesity, high-blood-pressure, hypertension, and possibly for osteoporosis (due to stimulating increased production of serum calcium).

Xylitol

This is naturally present in minute amounts in many fruits and vegetables. In fact, the body produces its own during certain metabolic processes. Although, it is classified as a carbohydrate, it is slowly absorbed in the digestive tract. Thus, it does not cause a rapid increase in blood glucose or insulin. It also does not cause cavities, unlike sugar, the bacteria in the mouth cannot utilize it and die. It is considered a safe and natural alternative for a sweet tooth. Dentists and nutritionists recommend its use!

Reducing sugar intake can significantly reduce daily caloric intake. By making it a habit to consume less sugar daily, over time we can reduce more body fat. As part of a healthy diet and lifestyle, these two sweeteners can help you enjoy your favorite foods without packaging on the pounds.

Summer Is Almost Here!!

Bye Bye Cellulite With These Tips

It doesn’t matter the season, fighting cellulite is an ongoing project. Just as we look after other aspects of our health and beauty, such as exercising, eating healthy, brushing our teeth, so too fighting cellulite should be a daily habit.

There are a few tiny rules to know about smoothing cellulite:
~ Drink plenty of fluids, especially water
~ Exercise is essential for getting toned
~ Everybody has cellulite, even super models
~ The main idea is to plump up the skin and increase circulation
~ That you put onto your body is as important to what you put into it

Here’s what to do:

1-Before you take your morning shower, exfoliate the affected areas with products that have grit or sea salt in them. These products increase circulation while sloughing off older skin. Over time this leaves the skin smoother and improves the blood flow to the area when repeated regularly.

2-Get an anti-cellulite device to use in the shower. These are hand held and have rubber spikes or knobs on them which also stimulate circulation to the area.

3-Get Caffeinated. Use a lotion which contains natural plant sources of caffeine on a daily basis. Some people swear by ground coffee scrubs and compresses. Caffeine works in external applications by drawing fluids to the area, plumping it up and reducing the appearance of cellulite. Also, try lotions which promise to help tighten the skin, even if the effect is temporary.

4-Reduce intake of sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and dairy products. These can cause increases in certain hormones which will make the appearance of the condition worse.

5-Reduce stress, stress can aggravate the condition and cause spikes in cortisol levels which promote fat gain. A high stress lifestyle can also induce production of catecholamines which has been associated with cellulite.

6-Continue losing weight and try to maintain a steady healthy weight. Rapid changes in weight can loosen the skins bonds, which may worsen the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite is a natural skin condition most prevalent in women. Everybody on earth suffers from it. Treatments can only lessen the appearance of the condition.

What is it? Between the dermis (skin) and the muscle is a layer of fat. This fat is essential for maintaining body temperature, when weight is at a normal level. However, the fat deposits are not distributed evenly. It is less apparent when the skin is tight, but if the skin becomes loose, such as after significant weight loss. There is no way to cure it. However, improving the hydration of the area, improving circulation to the area, and improving skin tautness and tone, can have a dramatic affect on its appearance.

Other measures include keeping the body adequately hydrated. Get plenty of exercise, which improves circulation. Eating plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and adequate proteins, which can help keep hormone levels even. Also, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding fast weight losses repeatedly, as this can loosing the bonds between the skin and the underlying tissues.

Build a Body you can be Proud Of In Just 20 minutes or Less Per Day!

Build a Body you can be Proud Of In Just 20 minutes or Less Per Day!

If you truly want to be in the best shape of your life, and stay that way, it takes long term commitments to health and a routine of activities YOU can look forward to. Just as we have different tastes in foods, music, clothing, work, and entertainment, so to not all physical activities work for everyone.

Here are ten simple steps for building a fabulous body:

1- Think long term, not quick fix. Rather than jumping into a set of activities and long duration routines, start with small steps and build your way up. Jumping into intense workouts doesn’t work, it just sets us for feeling like failures. Instead, pick something small and build on that.

2- Forget getting all the workout done in one sitting, how many of us have time for that? Four to eight short bursts of 5 to 10 minutes each can provide long term and lasting benefits. Start with two 5-minute sessions and add to that. A little something is better than nothing.

3- Do something upon rising. Even if it’s 2 minutes of jumping jacks or a few rounds up and down the stairs. Getting your metabolism up within the first 45 minutes of rising can keep it raised all day.

4- Use it as a mid-morning/afternoon pick-me-up. Instead of reaching for that donut, cup of coffee, or candy bar, take a hike. Plan two five minute breaks per day. Take a walk around, go into the break room and use bands or light weights. Do something different and get your blood, and brain activated.

5- Forget videos and equipment. Nature handed us the best equipment we can get, our own body. Learn isometric exercises. The most beneficial exercise takes light clothing, comfortable shoes, and your mind. If you do plan on investing, try inexpensive items such as stepper machines, bands, balls, and floor mats.

6- Find a buddy. If you’re at work, find a co-worker who can share in your twice daily trips around the complex. If you've got a significant other, invite them to take a brisk walk before or after meal times. Grab your pals and (leaving credit cards at home) hit the mall for a chit chat while walking.

7- Find refreshment in going solo. Got a hectic schedule, a bustling house full of people, need to get away? The easiest mini vacation may be a solo walk around your block. (in safe neighborhoods), those few quiet moments before the family gets out of bed, or in the evening as everybody moves onto TV and homework. Get out, get away, go for a 5-minute walk.

8- Check out our blog for tips on surging and burst training. Just 12 minutes per day and you could look like a super model in a year. Surge and burst training differ from walking, jogging, cycling. While those do burn some calories, if ill conditioned for the activity, they can raise cortisol levels, defeating the purpose. Surge and burst training effectively lowers cortisol levels and encourages the body to level off leptin and insulin levels naturally.

9- Pick a sport or hobby, any sport or hobby. Find something YOU enjoy doing which tricks your mind into thinking "hey, this is super fun" instead of "oh, so were going exercising again."

10- Of course, other methods work too, take the stairs instead of the elevator, park farther out and force yourself to walk farther to the grocery store door. Many little new and light activities, small changes done during the day, can help burn fat and calories and not even feel like exercise. After a few days, it may feel second nature to do things differently.
